SAXOPHONE
REED PREPARATION
| To
prepare a reed, soak the thin part of the reed in your mouth. This will
make it easier to
produce a good tone. It's a good idea to soak the reed while assembling
the saxophone.
|
ASSEMBLY
1. When assembling, always pick up the saxophone by the bell, dont lift it by the keys. Use a saxophone stand inbetween playing to avoid laying it down on the keys. 2. Loosen the neck screws then attach the neck to the body, don't over-tighten, just enough to stop any movement. |

| 3. Next attach the mouthpiece to the neck by pushing the mouthpiece about halfway down the cork so it is secure. Use cork grease to lubricate the cork. |

4.
After soaking the reed, place the flat side onto the mouthpiece and slide
it under the ligature.
Align the thin, curved end with the curved end of the mouthpiece. Make
sure the reed is
straight, then tighten the screws on the ligature (do not over-tighten). |

5. Place the saxophone strap around your neck and clip it to the strap ring (about half way down the back of the sax). |

CARE & MAINTENANCE
| Check the condition of all pads making sure they are correctly seated. Replace any pads that have cracks or damage. Check the operation of all the keys, making sure they open and close properly. Keys can be oiled if necessary (a technicion is recommended for repairs). Clean the sax often with a clean cloth. Wax and lacquer products are available for polishing. Always remove the reed and ligiture when not in use. Keep the mouthpiece clean at all times. Washing the mouth piece with warm water (not hot) is best. Always pick up the saxophone by the bell to avoid damaging the keys. Use a proper reed guard case to protect your reeds when not in use.
Always keep the instrument stored in its case when not in use.
Always drain moisture from the sax by tipping the bell forward then upside down. Use a pad swab or sax diaper to clean the inside. When swabbing, hold the keys closed to help clear the moisture from the pads. This will help to keep the pads in good condition and improve longevity. |
